Artist Statement

My work explores cultural identity, community, and belonging. Growing up with Japanese and Irish immigrant parents in the Midwest, I have long reflected on what defines a sense of home—is it a place, an object, a community, or one’s heritage? In a world that often frames identity as singular, my work examines its layered nature.

I approach this through plywood cutouts and painted surfaces, combining familiar places and domestic objects with patterns from my family heritage, including Celtic plaids and traditional Japanese crests (Kamon). By layering these visual languages, I explore how memory, place, and cultural inheritance shape belonging and invite viewers to consider the intersections of place, identity, and memory.
